 | IntroductionBuffalo Municipal Housing Authority (BMHA) After School Program Literacy Volunteers of Buffalo & Erie County began an after school program with the BMHA at three of their community center sites: Martha Mitchell Community Center, Northwest Community Center and Fredrick Douglass Towers. Supplemental Education Services (SES) Tutoring
After-school tutoring is available for students in grades K-8 in English Language Arts (ELA) through the federal No Child Left Behind Act. Services are available for students who are English Language Learners, and for those who may need help with basic reading skills, or who just want to excel!
Students are tutored in a small group by a certified teacher and, whenever possible, with extra help from a trained peer tutor. Learning materials are geared toward meeting the state’s learning standards and achievement test requirements, but also to develop a love for reading and learning. Parents are key partners in getting an edge on reading.
To participate, an application must be filled out and returned to the Literacy Volunteers main office. Tutoring is offered at many convenient sites across the community and, depending on the site, takes place one or two days per week for a couple of hours from November – June. Pre-registration is required.
In other SES tutoring programs, you must attend an eligible school and receive free or reduced-price lunch. One thing that sets us apart from other SES providers is that we have secured funding from other sources which allows us to serve students who may otherwise be ineligible for the program based on these requirements.
